Stop 1 – Whatoff’s Borrow Pit

چکیده
The Des Moines Lobe was the largest of several lobes of the Laurentide Ice Sheet that extended into the mid-continent region of North America near the end of the last glaciation. At its maximum extent, ~13,800 radiocarbon years ago, the lobe was up to 250 km wide and covered greater than 10 km in southern Minnesota and north-central Iowa (Fig. 1). The lobe deposited diverse sediments, but only its basal till, seen here in

Stop 1a – Whatoff’s Pit Fractures in till of the Des Moines Lobe
Tills are considered by many to be impermeable and thus should prevent vertical and horizontal transport of pointand nonpoint-source contaminants. However, studies in Iowa have shown that aquifers underlying till are contaminated and that streams contain high concentrations of nutrients and pesticides (e.g., Kolpin et al., 1995; Burkart et al., 2004). We observed fractures in till of the Des Mo...

Numerous pits in coastal waters are subject to degraded water quality and benthic habitat conditions, resulting in degraded fish habitat. A pit in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey (USA) was partially filled with dredged sediment to increase flushing, alleviate hypoxia, and enhance benthic assemblages. Restoration objectives were assessed in terms of benthic community parameters and fishery resource occ...

The " Sudden Stop " phenomenon of the recurrent emerging markets crises of the last ten years is one of the key questions facing International Macroeconomics. Sudden Stops are defined by unusually large recessions marked by: sharp, abrupt current account reversals, large contractions in output and absorption, and collapses in goods and asset prices. In Mexico's 1995 Sudden Stop, for example, th...
متن کاملPatient handover from surgery to intensive care: using Formula 1 pit-stop and aviation models to improve safety and quality.
BACKGROUND We aimed to improve the quality and safety of handover of patients from surgery to intensive care using the analogy of a Formula 1 pit stop and expertise from aviation. METHODS A prospective intervention study measured the change in performance before and after the implementation of a new handover protocol that was developed through detailed discussions with a Formula 1 racing team...
متن کاملSodium-dependent phosphate cotransporters and phosphate-induced calcification of vascular smooth muscle cells: redundant roles for PiT-1 and PiT-2.
OBJECTIVE Elevated serum phosphate has emerged as a major risk factor for vascular calcification. The sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporter, PiT-1, was previously shown to be required for phosphate-induced osteogenic differentiation and calcification of cultured human vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), but its importance in vascular calcification in vivo and the potential role of its homo...
